Thyron, Sword of Truth

Thyron is one of my favorite warcasters.  He has some very solid support abilities and a useful if not overly strong feat.  His personal stats are already good but he can amp them up to among the best fairly easily with Storm Rager and some of our support solos.  A quick note on his feat - the wording states models only need to begin their activations within his control to benefit not stay within.  It's fairly easy to rocket a jack pretty deep with assail and side step while still benefiting from the additional die on melee attack rolls.

You are likely to see lots of fane knight guardians, lys healers, and probably banshees in lists I write for Thyron.  The Fane Knight Guardian providing him with guard dog brings his melee defense up to an elite def 17 which is nice and when combined with Riposte really dissuades even attempting most of the time.  Thyron also doesn't hate having the shield guard around to absorb something like a paralyze shot.  The Lys Healer combines very effectively with into the support package by making Thyron unable to be knocked down or made stationary.  A caster being 17/18 with high power ripostes before factoring in any terrain benefits turns off a lot of assassinations.

The banshee sees a lot of play with him for me because of how well it combines with Assail.  The bonus to slam distance in Assail isn't usually a particularly useful benefit because slams are pretty corner case tactics.  The banshee is an exception to this as the momentum gun does benefit from that additional distance.

This is the most recent build of a list style I have been working on for quite awhile.  I have not tested the min halbs version (see list 2 for the last version I had on the table).  It runs basically like a control gunline.  You use the battle engines, jacks, and stormfall archers to eliminate the things that actually threaten Thyron as you move up the table.  Despite Thyron's feat effecting melee I find spell piercer is much much more efficient on guns.  In a list like this I often hold his feat for either finishing off the game or going for a side step assassination when an opponent feels forced to bring their caster forward.

Depending on what you anticipate playing this into the stromfall archers could easily become electromancers or heavy rifles or such.

List 2

Retribution Army - 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Defenders of Ios

(Thyron 1) Thyron, Sword of Truth [+27]
 - Banshee [18]
 - Harpy [9]
 - Fane Knight Guardian [0(4)]
Arcanist Mechanik [2]
Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios [0(7)]
Fane Knight Skeryth Issyen [0(8)]
Houseguard Thane [4]
Lys Healer [3]
Houseguard Halberdiers (max) [13]
 - Houseguard Halberdier Officer & Standard [4]
 - Soulless Escort (1) [1]
Lynus Wesselbaum & Edrea Lloryrr [5]
Stormfall Archers [9]
Arcantrik Force Generator [17]
Arcantrik Force Generator [17]

This is the last version that actually made it to the table.  This version runs a full unit of halbs and Lynus and Edrea over the second unit of stormfall archers.  I'm not actually sure Lynus and Edrea are worthwhile but there is more cloud tech in the game now than ever before.

List 3

Retribution Army - 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Defenders of Ios

(Thyron 1) Thyron, Sword of Truth [+27]
 - Banshee [18]
 - Harpy [9]
 - Fane Knight Guardian [4]
Aelyth Vyr, Blade of Nyssor [0(5)]
Arcanist Mechanik [2]
Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios [0(7)]
Fane Knight Skeryth Issyen [0(8)]

Lys Healer [3]
House Vyre Electromancers [8]
Stormfall Archers [9]
Stormfall Archers [9]
Arcantrik Force Generator [17]

Arcantrik Force Generator [17]

This is basically a version I was running on ADR.  It uses no melee front which was a little weird but Aelith Vyr, Issyen, and the Harpy as a the front wasn't completely bad.  Thyron does have an issue with focus trying to move Storm Rager around which is a mild annoyance.  I think this style was much better in ADR where I had a melee unit and a second unit of electromancers as side board to swap in depending on what I was playing against.

I also like ghost snipers quite a bit.  This list has 9 points of auto damage to deal with something like say a hellmouth.

List 4

Retribution Army - 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Legions of Dawn

(Thyron 1) Thyron, Sword of Truth [+27]
 - Helios [34]
Arcanist Mechanik [2]
Arcanist Mechanik [2]
Arcanist Mechanik [2]
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir [0(4)]
 - Griffon [8]
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir [0(4)]
 - Griffon [8]
Dawnguard Sentinels (max) [18]
 - Dawnguard Sentinel Officer & Standard [4]
 - Soulless Escort (1) [1]
Dawnguard Sentinels (max) [18]
 - Dawnguard Sentinel Officer & Standard [4]
 - Soulless Escort (1) [1]

A rare legions list popping up.  This is a variation on a list I was playing with prior to the theme releases.  At the time there was only 1 scyir and the griffons were on Thyron himself but the theme makes this sort of interesting.  Rocketing off a griffon with assail and feat and crush can do some damage especially if you can trigger flank for it.

Houseguard Halberdiers (min) [8]
 - Houseguard Halberdier Officer & Standard [4]
 - Soulless Escort (1) [1]
Stormfall Archers [9]
Arcantrik Force Generator [17]

This is just a theory heavily theme list.  Nothing tested.  It goes down to single AFG but adds in a bunch of house guard stuff.  Still has some decent gun potential with the AFG, Stormfalls, HRTs, and battle group, but it also brings a more forward presence with 2 units of halbs.  It trades Eiryss1 for a second thane to support the halbs or HRTs as needed. Remember the heavy rifle can also benefit from desperate pace if needed in addition to occasionally wanting firing solution.

Destors in depth

Destors are a big enough block of rules to deserve a more detailed look.  As a unit they are probably too obtuse and rules dense but once played the interactions aren't actually that complicated. Lets start by just going through the models base stats.  Destors actually have a very solid basic stat line.  Most of their stats fall along the middle line of cavalry models with good speed, defense, armor, decent numbers in both attack stats, and 5 boxes.  Being cavalry they also benefit from having the option of making impact attacks and getting boosted charge attack rolls. Impact attacks are going to lead us directly into our first rules interaction.  Destors have quick work allowing them to make a basic ranged attack when they destroy an enemy model during their combat action.   The underlined part is important as impact attacks do not occur during their combat action and thus do not  trigger quick work. That leaves us two options for actually trigger  quick work.   We

I'm Back?

So it's been a couple of years since I've played but like many other players the broad scale update has me interested. The handful of games I've gotten in have definitely been enough to whet my appetite for more. I'm hoping to use this space to continue spotlighting specific models and combos as well as the occasional battle report.  It will probably take some time for a broad tournament meta to sort out with this level of changes and it will likely be shaken up again when the Orgoth faction is released so these might need updates relatively soon. I also just finished a local steamroller with the new and, in my opinion, dramatically improved Kaelyssa so I'll almost certainly be starting with some thoughts on her changes.

The Defenders Project

So I feel like right now defenders is so much better than all of our other themes that basically every caster in the faction can just play in defenders.  With that thought I decided to sit down and make a defenders list I like for each caster.  My theory is basically that 1-2 AFGs + 1-2 Halbs = best generic list in ret so each list will also include at least one afg and one unit of halbs.
